Alstom Transport selected Ukrainian enterprises to manufacture components for UA8AC dual system electric locomotives for Ukrzaliznytsia. The selection followed a review of local suppliers with experience in locomotive repair and rolling stock maintenance.
Ukrainian factories will produce radio stations, locomotive safety and fire alarm systems, braking system elements, couplers, cab heaters, seats, and sand delivery components. Separate talks are underway on local wheel production, which is important for long term maintenance and cost stability.
Production of the new locomotives has started, and the body of the first unit has already been built. It is expected to arrive in Ukraine in early 2027 for certification and endurance testing.
Delivery of the full batch of 55 locomotives is planned to be completed by May 2029. The contract was signed after a World Bank tender that attracted six major manufacturers, and the EBRD later joined the project.
The new locomotives are based on the Traxx Hauler platform and will be the first European built freight electric locomotives in Ukraine. They will operate on both AC and DC power. Key performance figures include up to 9,000 kW power, 120 km/h speed, and 800 kN starting tractive effort, along with modern traction control and improved working conditions for crews.
