American-Ukrainian Startup Vermeer Secures Funding from Draper Associates

The American-Ukrainian defense technology startup Vermeer has completed a $10 million Series A financing round to accelerate development of its Visual Positioning System (VPS) — a breakthrough navigation solution for drones that operates without reliance on GPS signals

The funding round was led by Draper Associates, one of the most recognized Silicon Valley venture capital firms, known for early investments in Tesla, SpaceX, and Baidu.

Vermeer’s technology is rapidly gaining attention for its strategic defense applications, particularly in environments where traditional satellite navigation is jammed, spoofed, or unavailable.

Company Profile and Core Technology

Headquartered in New York with an operations center in Kyiv, Vermeer specializes in computer vision, navigation, and autonomous flight systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Its flagship product, the Visual Positioning System (VPS), enables drones and other autonomous platforms to precisely determine their position using only optical data, without external signals.

How VPS Works

  • The system uses up to four electro-optical or infrared cameras to scan the environment.

  • It compares real-time visual data with a pre-loaded database of landmarks, terrain models, and 2D/3D maps.

  • An integrated AI algorithm processes the data to calculate exact position and orientation.

  • Since the system is passive, it emits no signals, making it immune to detection or electronic warfare interference.

This makes the technology particularly valuable for military operations, search and rescue missions, and autonomous logistics in GPS-denied environments.

Investment Details and Strategic Backers

The $10 million round was led by Draper Associates, joined by:

  • AeroX Ventures

  • Boscolo Intervest

  • High Point Ventures

  • Rockaway Ventures

  • U.S. Air Force Techstars

The funds will support further product development, AI model refinement, and production scaling to meet growing demand from defense and industrial customers.

“This investment allows us to enhance our autonomy stack and meet the rapidly increasing needs of our clients operating in complex, GPS-contested environments,” the company said.

Global Clients and Growth

Vermeer’s customer base already includes major defense and aerospace clients such as:

  • U.S. Army

  • U.S. Air Force

  • Lockheed Martin

  • Northrop Grumman

The company’s workforce has expanded from 10 to 40 employees over the past year, with eight engineers based in Ukraine, contributing to research and technical implementation.

Strategic Significance

The Vermeer VPS offers tactical independence and resilience in warfare and defense logistics — critical for both NATO and Ukrainian operations.
As electronic warfare (EW) becomes increasingly sophisticated, systems capable of functioning without satellite navigation are a priority for modern militaries.

Beyond defense, the VPS architecture also has civilian and commercial applications, including:

  • Autonomous cargo drones

  • Agricultural robotics

  • Infrastructure inspection

  • Disaster response operations

Outlook

Vermeer’s success signals a growing wave of defense-tech innovation linking Ukrainian engineering talent with U.S. venture capital and defense ecosystems.
The funding by Draper Associates underscores investor confidence in dual-use technologies — those with both military and civilian potential — and highlights Ukraine’s emerging role as a technology development hub in resilient navigation and autonomy systems.
