An Emerald From the Bottom of the Ocean Will Be Sold for Ukraine

A treasure from a ship that sank 400 years ago is up for "Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels"

At Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels auction came a ring with an emerald with a long history. Owner of decoration Mittsi Perju. She visited Ukraine in the summer and decided to put the emerald at the auction. She says all the money will be transferred to Ukrainians to satisfy humanitarian needs. The price of the stone is not less than $50.000.

The fact is that this precious stone is important not only for its owner. In 1622, the emerald was on the ship Nuestra Señora de Atocha, which sank during a storm. 6.25 carats were underwater until 1985. It was then that the hunters behind the treasure found a sunken colonizing vessel and treasure trove — 30 kg of Colombian emeralds, 180.000 silver coins, 24 tons of Bolivian silver, 125 gold bars and a collection of Venezuelan pearls. The expedition captain Mel Fisher received the emerald after the US Supreme Court in 1982 handed over all rights to hunters for complaints. Fischer proposed to his lady in a few years and presented a ring with an emerald with history.

According to Mittsi Perju, this jewellery is the most expensive that it has, and it is ready to hand it over to Ukraine.

"Although Frank donated almost all the coins and other artefacts he received from Atocha, he kept this thing because he was enchanted with the romance of history, I was not surprised that he kept the emerald," said the widow Mittsi Perju.

The emerald will soon continue to create its wonderful history, in which now Ukraine and hundreds of saved lives will be entered.
