On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, minister of foreign affairs of Australia Penny Wong expressed to his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi the idea that China is able to convince Russia to stop the war against Ukraine.
"On Ukraine – China is a great power, China is a P5 (permanent 5 councils) member, China has signed up to the UN charter," Penny Wong to Wang Yi.
"We believe, as does every country with the exception of Russia, that Russia is in breach of the UN charter through its illegal invasion of Ukraine. We encourage China as a P5 member with a special responsibility to uphold the UN charter, that they uphold the UN charter to use its influence with the war."
Minister Penny Wong said their dialogue during the July G20 meeting in Bali was constructive, and the two states are "on a long way" to improving international ties amid a 2-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
