On June 7, the Austrian Federal Ministry of European and international affairs reported that the Russian attack on the Kakhovka dam, which served the technical needs of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, "violates international law, jeopardizes nuclear safety and thus poses a real threat to Europe."
Therefore, the IAEA Austria, the Ministry of foreign affairs and the Ministry of climate protection are allocating €1 billion to continue the safety mission at 5 nuclear facilities in Ukraine, including the Zaporizhzhia NPP and Chornobyl.
"Russian roulette with the safety of Ukrainian nuclear power plants must finally come to an end. Austria has always led international efforts to ensure nuclear safety. The independent and impartial work of the IAEA on site and its presence at nuclear power plants is both an early warning system and life insurance. The attack on the Kakhovka dam and the possible impact on the supply of cooling water to the Zaporizhzhia NPP clearly demonstrates the importance of this mission," foreign minister Alexander Schallenberg.
"By contributing to the mission of support and assistance, we take responsibility for ensuring that this challenging task is done well," adds climate minister Leonore Gewessler.
The IAEA will carry out work to deploy the mission at all nuclear power plants in Ukraine in order to exclude military presence on them and to ensure transparent round-the-clock monitoring and information for the entire international community.
