“Baton Optic” Quadcopters Cleared for Ukrainian Service

New fibre-optic-guided drones expand the Armed Forces’ tactical strike portfolio

1. Defence Ministry Approval

  • Codification complete: The Ministry of Defence has formally entered the Ukrainian-made Baton Optic unmanned aerial system into the Armed Forces’ inventory.

  • Operational status: Units may now procure and deploy the platform without further certification.

2. Technical Profile

Feature Specification
Airframe Lightweight quadcopter
Propulsion High-output electric motors
Energy High-capacity battery pack
Control link Secure fibre-optic tether
Optics Configurable—twilight camera or thermal imager
Warhead Designed to neutralise tactical vehicles, gun positions, and ammunition depots
Weather capability Rated for adverse conditions

3. Intended Roles

  • Precision strikes on frontline logistics nodes

  • Suppression of enemy firing points

  • Rapid engagement of lightly armoured targets

4. Strategic Context

  • Production supports the President’s wider directive to scale interceptor-drone output and advance a domestic ballistic-missile programme.

  • Additional partner funding is being channelled into both areas to accelerate deployment schedules.

Implication: The Baton Optic adds a cost-effective, all-weather strike option to Ukraine’s drone fleet, enhancing tactical flexibility while domesticating key defence manufacturing capabilities.
