Bayer Unveils Details of €60 Million Investment in Zhytomyr Region

International conglomerate expands seed plant capacity, creating jobs and enhancing energy efficiency in Ukraine

Bayer, the global life sciences company, has disclosed detailed plans for its previously announced investment of €60 million aimed at expanding the capacity of its seed plant in the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine. The project involves collaboration with both Ukrainian construction and assembly companies and local representatives of foreign equipment manufacturers.

Key Investment Initiatives

  • Installation of a Third Corn Seed Dryer: To increase processing capabilities and meet growing demand.
  • Expansion of Machinery and Storage Facilities: Significant enlargement of the machine and tractor fleet, including the addition of new warehouses and equipment storage areas.
  • Acquisition of Modern Agricultural Equipment: Procurement of state-of-the-art machinery for various agricultural purposes to enhance efficiency.
  • Construction of Two Bomb Shelters: Building shelters with a total capacity of up to 400 people to ensure the safety of employees amid regional security concerns.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

In line with the expansion, Bayer plans to create approximately 100 new jobs to support the increased corn intake and processing operations. Positions in demand include:

  • Sorters
  • Operators
  • Forklift Drivers
  • Mechanics
  • Electricians
  • Instrumentation and Automation Technicians

The enhanced production capacity is expected to satisfy the demand for corn seeds both within Ukraine and across European Union countries, bolstering the agricultural sector's contribution to the economy.

Focus on Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

Bayer is emphasizing increased energy efficiency in its production processes. The plant has adopted the use of bioresources—specifically, corn cobs—as solid fuel to meet its energy needs. This initiative has allowed the facility to almost completely eliminate the use of natural gas. Additionally, the company is actively increasing the share of renewable ("green") energy in its operations.

Since the onset of the conflict in the region, Bayer has managed to reduce its CO2 emissions by more than 1,300 tons, showcasing its commitment to environmental sustainability even in challenging times.

Continued Development of Monsanto Plant

Bayer is also proceeding with the construction of a Monsanto seed production plant in the village of Pochuiky, Popilnia district, Zhytomyr region. Dedicated to producing corn seeds, this facility represents an additional €60 million investment in new infrastructure and technology.

Conclusion

Bayer's substantial investment underscores its commitment to supporting Ukraine's agricultural development while prioritizing employee safety and environmental responsibility. The expansion not only contributes to the local economy through job creation but also enhances the country's position in the international agricultural market.
