Belgium Freezes Over €50.5 Bln of Russian Assets

In accordance with the 6th and 7th packages of sanctions, Belgium blocked all funds of 1.239 Russian individuals and legal entities

In an interview with the newspaper De Tijd, the representative of the Belgian Ministry of finance, Francis Adyns, spoke about the state's participation in sanctions pressure on Russia due to its attack on Ukraine. In accordance with the 6th and 7th packages of sanctions, Belgium has frozen more than €50.5 billion. The amount is really high: a few weeks ago, the eurocommissioner for justice Didier Reynders shared information that at that time 5 EU countries collectively froze €12 billion. The commissioner did not share the exact details on which countries in question.

According to Francis Adyns, all financial resources (cash, shares, etc.) located on Belgium's territory fell under the sanctions. The freeze affected 1.129 individuals and 110 companies in Russia.

"We can only say that we have frozen large amounts of assets to individuals who were in the last waves of sanctions," said Francis Adyns.

Adyns did not name specific names, but it is known for sure that Alina Kabaeva, the founder of the Yandex search engine Arkady Volozh, relatives of Dmitry Peskov and several oligarchs were included in the 6th package of sanctions. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin and actors Sergei Bezrukov/Vladimir Mashkov appeared in the 7th package.
