"World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it. The contribution which an organized and living Europe can bring to civilization is indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations." These are the words of French foreign minister Robert Schuman, formulated in 1950. Now, when the largest and bloodiest war of the modern world is taking place in the heart of Europe, Schumann's words sound like a prophecy.
In a conversation with Ursula von der Leyen, the president of Ukraine emphasized that today all the strength and power of every European state is needed so that peace in Europe is a reality and not a pleasant memory.
"Now, when we once again jointly oppose the evil of aggression and the politics of hatred, which modern Russia has brought back to our continent when we again need a victory, we again turn to the meaning of those words from the Schumann Declaration. Our efforts for the sake of a united Europe, for the sake of security and peace, should be as strong as Russia's desire to destroy our security, freedom, and unity," Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The power of unity was demonstrated 78 years ago when a democratic coalition defeated Nazism. And today, we unite again to once again fight for our values and the right to live in a safe world.
