According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga, the initiative has proven to be extremely beneficial for Ukraine.
“So far, we’ve managed to deliver up to 80% of the promised shells. By the end of 2024, the Czech side delivered 520,000 155 mm rounds and a significant amount of other calibers. All the shells of various types that were promised have been purchased,” Sybiga stated.
Funding and Final Deliveries
The minister noted that completing these final deliveries hinges on donor funding. While some countries committed money to support the purchase of ammunition, not all have followed through.
“We must remember that the entire purchase depends on donor funds. The Czech Republic coordinates the collection of these funds from our partners, and Ukrainian diplomats also work with international capitals to fulfill these commitments. Unfortunately, certain states pledged support but still haven’t contributed the funds,” Sybiga said.
Looking Ahead
The Czech government has decided to direct a portion of the interest earned on frozen Russian assets in the European Union toward acquiring more artillery ammunition for Ukraine. Although Ukraine is grateful for the so-called Czech “shell initiative,” it continues to ask for faster deliveries, as logistics remain a pressing issue.
The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the program of supplying ammunition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces will continue into 2025. Allies have identified a “large number” of shells available for purchase and shipment to Ukrainian forces.
