DNA-Base of Ukrainian Military and Law Enforcement

On July 9, 2022, the law on the registration of genomic data of employees of defense and law enforcement structures came into force

According to deputy interior minister Ihor Bondarenko, a DNA database of employees of the relevant structures is being developed today. The need for a base was dictated by the conditions of the war and will operate during the period of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine.

At the moment, the Ministry of internal affairs already has 13 laboratories, but previously they were used only for the needs of criminal investigations. The new DNA database will serve to identify persons who have committed criminal offenses, search for missing persons, and identify corpses and body parts.

For military personnel and other categories of citizens associated with military operations, registration of DNA data is mandatory. For the rest wishing — voluntary. So far, the data will be entered only in the personal files of a citizen and will be used only if necessary,
