Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh Visits Kyiv

Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh marked a historic visit to Kyiv, becoming the first member of the British royal family to travel to Ukraine since the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022

The visit, as reported by the BBC, was organized under the auspices of the British Foreign Office to express solidarity with those impacted by the conflict.

During her stay, the Duchess paid tribute to the victims of the Russian occupation in the city of Bucha, Kyiv region. Her schedule included engagements where she interacted with survivors of sexual violence and torture. At a reception hosted by Martin Harris, the British Ambassador to Ukraine, Sophie shared insights from her previous experiences with victims of conflicts in other nations.

Furthermore, the Duchess engaged with children who had been forcibly deported to Russia by the occupiers and subsequently returned to Ukraine. She also visited a strategically important bridge, destroyed during the conflict to halt the advance of Russian troops towards Kyiv.

A highlight of her visit was her meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska, during which she delivered a personal message from King Charles III. The discussions also focused on bolstering support for victims of sexual violence in conflict zones.
