Estonia is prepared to make a tangible military contribution to deter Russian aggression in Ukraine, including the deployment of a combat unit, according to Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal.
Speaking about Estonia’s involvement in the emerging "Coalition of the Resolute", which includes Great Britain and France, Michal confirmed that Estonia is ready to provide:
-
A company-sized land forces unit
-
Training instructors
-
Staff officers for strategic support
“Before sending the unit, we will of course seek a mandate from the Riigikogu,” Michal stated, referencing the Estonian parliament.
NATO Membership Is the Goal, But Ukraine Needs Immediate Defense
While reaffirming that Ukraine’s future lies in NATO, the Estonian prime minister stressed the importance of short-term security guarantees.
“An independent, sovereign Ukraine, integrated into the European family, is the best strategic guarantee against Moscow's imperialism,” Michal said.
“We must demonstrate that good intentions can be matched with concrete actions.”
Background: What Is the "Coalition of the Resolute"?
Formed in early 2024, the "Coalition of the Resolute" is a defense initiative spearheaded by France and the UK. It aims to provide practical military support to Ukraine, including the potential deployment of troops, to bolster Kyiv’s defense against ongoing Russian aggression.
The coalition has been gaining momentum, with several European nations, including Estonia, exploring options to contribute personnel, training, logistics, and technology.
Why It Matters
Estonia's announcement marks a significant step in European military solidarity with Ukraine, especially from a frontline NATO state bordering Russia. The commitment sends a clear signal to Moscow: Ukraine is not alone, and the West is prepared to escalate support to ensure its survival and sovereignty.
