EU Allocates €14.7 Million to Strengthen Food Security in Ukraine

Funding to support WFP’s food and cash assistance for frontline families and sustain humanitarian logistics before winter

EU Boosts WFP Operations in Ukraine

The European Union has allocated €14.7 million to support the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Ukraine. The funds will ensure that Ukrainians living in frontline and high-risk areas continue to receive both food and cash assistance, particularly as winter approaches.

This contribution comes at a critical time, when humanitarian budgets for Ukraine are under strain, and daily shelling is worsening conditions along the 850-kilometre frontline.

What the Funding Will Cover

According to WFP, EU support will be used for:

  • 30-day food kits, ready-to-eat rations, and fresh bread deliveries to vulnerable households.

  • Cash assistance in areas where local markets remain functional and food supplies are available.

  • Logistical coordination through the WFP-led Logistics Cluster, which facilitates humanitarian convoys to high-risk regions.

👉 This dual approach — direct food aid and cash support — helps families avoid cutting back on essentials or taking on debt, while also sustaining local market activity.

EU & WFP Statements

“The EU assistance comes at a critical time when funding for Ukraine’s humanitarian needs is extremely limited and the situation on the front lines is deteriorating due to daily shelling,”
Nanna Skau, Deputy Country Director of WFP Ukraine.

The EU emphasized that its support reflects a long-term commitment to protecting civilians, ensuring food security, and sustaining Ukraine’s resilience against Russian aggression.

Wider Context of Ukraine’s Food Sector

Despite the war, Ukraine continues to play a major role in global food markets:

  • 32% of sugar production is exported, underlining the sector’s export potential.

  • The Ukrainian organic market is being stabilized with EU assistance, ensuring farmers can maintain certification and access premium markets.

Outlook

The €14.7 million allocation is both a humanitarian intervention and a stabilizing factor for Ukraine’s agri-food system. By supporting WFP and local partners, the EU ensures frontline communities are not left behind, while also reinforcing Ukraine’s role as a strategic food supplier to Europe and the world.
