At a meeting of the European Union Energy Ministers, European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson announced the allocation of €3 million to support International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) monitoring systems at Ukraine's nuclear power plants.
These funds are intended to bolster nuclear safety measures and can also be utilized for work at critical substations essential for the functioning of nuclear facilities. Commissioner Simson emphasized the serious threats posed by Russian attacks on vital substations in Ukraine:
"Russian attacks on important substations in Ukraine pose serious threats to nuclear security," Simson stated.
Ukraine's Minister of Energy, German Galushchenko, added that the country is preparing for another challenging winter due to an anticipated increase in the intensity of attacks. He highlighted the importance of international support in strengthening Ukraine's energy infrastructure:
"With your support, both directly and through mechanisms like the Energy Support Fund of Ukraine, we are implementing the concept of decentralized distributed generation. We are installing gas turbines and gas piston units to help ensure electricity and heat supply when connected to the grid," Galushchenko explained.
