The European Union has extended its technical assistance project for the transport development of the Dnipro River. The new phase will last eighteen months and should continue until the end of 2027.
The project is implemented through a contract between the European Commission and a consortium including Ecorys Nederland B.V. and Nestra B.V. For Ukraine, the program remains part of a wider effort to integrate inland water transport with European standards.
What the new phase covers
The priority is further harmonization of Ukrainian legislation with EU directives and regulations for inland water transport. Ukraine also expects support in obtaining EU-level recognition of its new qualification system for crews of inland navigation vessels.
The work should include digital registers for vessels and qualification documents, stronger capacity for responsible public authorities and further development of river information services.
River transport is a logistics reserve for Ukraine, especially when export routes and border corridors remain under pressure.
The practical value of the project will depend on whether legal alignment is followed by usable digital systems, trained crews and reliable port infrastructure.
