Legislation on the collection, storage, and use of stem cells has been in force in Ukraine for eight years. The Ministry of health and the cabinet were following the issue closely, as operations were a complex process.
On 2 February, the cabinet of ministers expanded the list of hospitals capable of performing stem cell transplants. The updated list included:
- West-Ukrainian specialized children’s medical center in Lviv;
- Feofaniya clinical hospital in Kyiv;
- Dnipropetrovsk city child clinic.
In the meantime, these hospitals will be conducting stem cell transplants as part of a pilot project. The transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells is carried out in the control of blood diseases, bone marrow, and some malignant tumors. Ukraine plans to expand the existing list soon. In central Ukraine, the Dnipro is considering the possibility of building a transplantation center.
"In 2022, we plan to develop bone marrow stem cell transplants. We did the design. Next, the authorities of the Dnipro and the region will support us in the construction of the transplant center," Nataliia But, the general director of the Clinical hospital 4, told.
Despite the complexity of these processes, doctors do not give up and save lives. This helps to develop medicine and improve skills. The state closely monitors and, in some cases, supports everything.
