Expansion of the Vegetable Sector Between Ukraine and Saudi Arabia

In 2021, Ukraine first exported carrots to Saudi Arabia

In recent years, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia have been actively building trade relations. From 2020 to 2021, Ukraine began exporting:

  • Caviar;
  • Seafood;
  • Honey;
  • Potato.

Also at the end of the year, Ukrainian carrots were added to the list.

In 2021, Ukraine first exported the commercial party of carrots to the Saudi Arabia marketplace. In fall 2021, 24 tons of carrots were shipped from Ukraine to Saudi Arabia.

In total, 11.6 thousand tons of carrots were sold from the country during the year. It is worth noting that this is a normal commodity, not an export quality. But he’s still in demand.

"The states of the Middle East regularly import more than 300 thousand tons of raw carrots. Including the OAU — about 100 thousand tons, Saudi Arabia — from 50 to 60.000 tons. 20 thousand tons of carrots are imported per year by Kuwait and Qatar. This is a massive demand that could provide the Ukrainian vegetable business with a good level of stability, and at the same time would allow reducing logistics costs due to increased supply," said the economist of the investment department of food and agribusiness organization of the United Nations Andrii Yarmak.

Thus, now agro-enterprises growing carrots have a task to decide the direction of development or not. To increase the number of carrot exports, in Ukraine it is necessary to invest in more effective technologies of growing, in more expensive machinery, in modern equipment for processing, cooling, grouping, and packing of vegetables.
