In late June, European political leaders will gather at the NATO summit in Madrid. NATO is expected to consider the request of Finland and Sweden at the meeting. But NATO secretary-general Stoltenberg notes that the June summit is not the deadline for a decision. However, some parties are already ready to show their mood. They are concerned about the security of countries. In particular, the president of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, made an important statement.
Sauli Niinistö said he was not ready to join NATO without Sweden. This view was voiced at a press conference with NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg. It should be noted that Sweden may remain under consideration for membership due to Turkey's objections.
Turkey is among the 30 countries to respond to the admission of new countries to NATO. But Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan gives a negative answer. He attributes this to "Finland's and Sweden's lack of a clear position on the Kurds." It is worth noting that Kurds are considered in Turkey by representatives of terrorist organizations. Turkey has suffered the most from terrorist acts.
Niinistö replied that Turkey's objections had come as a surprise to him. However, he acknowledged that the demands of Ankara deserved serious attention and that if Sweden did not join the alliance, Finland, too.
"The case of Sweden is ours. This means that we go hand-in-hand," Sauli Niinistö stressed.
We remind you that Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO on May 18.
