Gas Production in Ukraine Grows by Over 5% in a Year – Naftogaz

Ukraine has seen a notable increase in gas production over the past year

According to Naftogaz Group, its subsidiary JSC “Ukrgazvydobuvannya” boosted commercial gas production by 5.3% in 2024, rising from 13.2 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2023 to 13.9 bcm last year. This marks a key achievement in the country’s efforts to enhance energy self-sufficiency amid ongoing challenges for the energy sector.

Key Production Figures

  1. Total Output

    • 13.9 bcm of commercial gas in 2024 (up from 13.2 bcm in 2023)
    • Represents a 5.3% increase in annual production
  2. New Wells

    • 83 new wells were brought online
    • Out of these, 60 are production wells and 23 are exploration wells
  3. Directional Drilling

    • 60 directional wells were drilled in 2024 (compared to 51 in 2023)
    • Directional drilling enables tapping into hard-to-reach reserves by angling the drill path below ground
  4. Record Drilling Meterage

    • 370 thousand meters drilled in total
    • This figure stands at 14% above 2023’s results and sets a record for recent years, according to Naftogaz

Significance of the Results

Strengthening Energy Security

The increase in gas production helps Ukraine reduce dependence on imported energy resources, supporting national energy security. Steady progress in tapping domestic reserves gives the sector greater resilience, particularly in the face of geopolitical headwinds.

Technological Progress

A rise in directional drilling and the drilling of 370 thousand meters highlight the industry’s modernization. These high-precision methods allow extraction of hydrocarbons from challenging rock formations and deeper layers, making previously hard-to-access reserves viable.

Production Expansion

Adding 83 new wells, including 23 exploration wells, underlines Ukrainian gas producers’ commitment to exploration and production (E&P) activities. The goal is not only to sustain current output levels but to potentially discover new fields and boost the country’s overall resource base.

Looking Ahead

Officials at Naftogaz Group suggest that the expanded drilling program and adoption of advanced extraction technologies will continue in the coming years. In addition, plans for intensifying exploration, investing in production infrastructure, and further optimizing operational processes are underway.

  • Exploration & Innovation
The company aims to explore deeper horizons and enhance digital monitoring systems for drilling, production, and maintenance.
  • Cooperation & Investment
Partnerships with foreign technology firms and local businesses could broaden the technical capabilities of Ukrainian gas production and help finance new projects.

By focusing on long-term resource development and modern drilling methods, Ukrgazvydobuvannya and Naftogaz look to build upon these 2024 gains, paving the way for sustainable growth of Ukraine’s domestic energy sector and further advancing the nation’s energy independence.
