However, in a recent interview with ZDF TV channel, Pistorius revealed that Germany is poised to deliver almost 200,000 munitions to Ukraine soon.
Pistorius explained that achieving the goal of 1 million shells has been challenging for the defense industry, which operated under peacetime conditions. The expectations set for such a large quantity of ammunition were not met, but he assured that the situation is expected to improve shortly.
"The coming months will see significant improvements. Germany alone is on track to provide nearly 200,000 munitions. However, this process takes time and is not solely dependent on political decisions or financial resources," Pistorius stated.
He emphasized Germany's ongoing efforts to support Ukraine militarily, noting that Germany is a leading aid provider to Kyiv, significantly ahead of other countries. Special attention is being paid to strengthening Ukrainian air defense, especially in the second winter of hostilities.
Pistorius also clarified that Ukraine is not an official ally of Berlin, as Ukraine is not a NATO member, and there are no binding obligations between the two countries. He confirmed that the Bundeswehr does not supply anything to the Russian army.
"The focus should primarily be on maintaining a stable supply chain, despite any potential bottlenecks," the Defense Minister added.
On December 4, it was reported that Rheinmetall secured a substantial contract to produce ammunition for Ukraine. Additionally, on November 30, Rheinmetall showcased a documentary highlighting its aid to Ukraine and the company's operations.
