This trend has been highlighted by Ihor Vishtak, Director of the Department of Agrarian Development at the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.
Vishtak noted that the growth of hemp farming is not only promising for agriculture but could also positively impact related industries such as food, textiles, and paper production. The revival of industrial hemp farming has been facilitated by legislative changes, particularly the adoption of the law on medical cannabis.
In addition, the Ukrainian Parliament passed Law No. 3528-IX on state regulation of hemp plant circulation on December 21, 2023. Experts believe this legislation will stimulate further expansion of hemp cultivation, making it an appealing option for agricultural producers. The area of industrial hemp is projected to grow significantly as it is now treated like any other agricultural crop, no longer requiring licenses or quotas.
Vishtak emphasized that Ukraine is home to some of the best industrial hemp varieties globally, and with its strong scientific foundation, the country has the potential to lead in hemp breeding and development. Key research institutions, such as the Institute of Basal Crops and the Institute of Agriculture of the Northeast of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, play a crucial role in this advancement.
In addition to these scientific efforts, 11 private agricultural enterprises in Ukraine are already involved in cultivating hemp seeds, signaling a robust future for the industry.
