Howard G. Buffett Foundation and the State agency for rehabilitation and infrastructure development of Ukraine launched the Modular Bridge joint project in April 2022. The project's goal is obvious — to restore logistics along key transport routes by installing new modular bridges to replace those destroyed by the Russian army.
On June 26, Ukraine received 9 modular bridges from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, which will be installed in areas bordering the military front line — Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Kherson regions.
"In the frontline regions, people's livelihood depends primarily on roads. The destruction of bridges disconnects communities from basic services. It is essential for us to restore logistics as quickly as possible so that people have access to medical care, rescuers, utilities, and so on," Mustafa Nayem, head of the Recovery agency of Ukraine.
The bridge manufacturer is Acrow Corporation. Their advantage is the maximum ease of installation: 5-10 engineers are required for 1 bridge, and immediately after installation, the bridges are poured with asphalt. Notably, these bridges can be used several times in a row. Thus, the same bridge can serve first in Kharkiv and eventually — in the liberated Donetsk.
During the full-scale war, Ukraine received 37 bridges, 18 pontoon crossings and 6 pontoon boats from partners and philanthropists from Czechia, France, Sweden and Norway.
