Ukrainian enterprises in November 2021 increased the export of scrap metal 78.5 times compared to the corresponding month of 2020 – up to 44 thousand tons. In monetary terms, the supply of scrap abroad increased by 45.9 times – up to $16.2 million. It was evidenced by the data of customs statistics.
In January-November, the country increased its revenue from the export of raw materials by 24.8 times compared to the same period last year – up to $211.9 million.
For 11 months, scrap collectors exported 547.2 thousand tons, which is 16.6 times more than in January-November 2020.
The main consumer of Ukrainian scrap is Turkey (84.8%). Romania's share in the total export of Ukrainian scrap in January-November amounted to 7.5%. Poland is in third place – 3.7%.
Imports of raw materials to Ukraine in January-November increased by 1.3% compared to the same period last year – up to 21.3 thousand tons. In monetary terms, the indicator increased by 87.7% – up to $40.9 million: Turkey (60.4%), RF (33%), and Poland (3.4%).
Since the middle of the year, metallurgists have advocated a ban on the export of scrap metal until the end of 2023 in order to maintain the stable operation of domestic enterprises. In turn, the associations of participants in the scrap procurement market were against this initiative. In particular, UAVtormet (Ukrainian scrap industry association) insisted on an objective examination of the impact of this ban on the scrap procurement market.
