On March 22, 2022, the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, declared Kyiv, an honorary citizen of Paris. On April 22, 2023, during the visit of Anne Hidalgo to Kyiv to meet with mayor Klitschko, the renaming of the square in the centre of the French capital was announced.
It is known that the square will be opened in a few months — this June.
During a full-scale Russian war against Ukraine, foreign politicians, with rare exceptions, traditionally do not stay overnight in Kyiv. Hidalgo is one of the few who spent several days in Ukraine. On April 20, president Zelenskyy honoured the brave mayor and her city with a Savior City award for supporting Ukraine during this winter's energy crisis.
