Japan shows interest in Zakarpattia blueberries

A JETRO representative visited a Ukrainian berry producer to assess export potential

Japan is taking a closer look at Ukrainian blueberries from Zakarpattia. A representative of the Japan External Trade Organization visited the Blue Berry enterprise in the village of Velyki Luchky to assess the company’s production and post-harvest handling capacity.

The visit matters because JETRO works under the Japanese government and helps foreign companies access the Japanese market. For Ukrainian berry producers, such attention signals that premium export destinations remain open to discussion even during wartime.

Quality as the entry ticket

The company showed the delegation a full production cycle, including cultivation technologies and post-harvest preparation. For Japan, stable quality, traceability and compliance with strict standards are essential before any agricultural product can enter the market.

Ukrainian berry farms have been investing in modern growing methods, cooling and sorting. These steps are important not only for Japan, but also for broader access to demanding international buyers.

The meeting does not automatically mean immediate exports. Still, it creates a useful channel for dialogue and shows that Ukrainian agribusiness can present itself as a reliable partner in high-value niche markets.
