The Mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, has announced that the city is preparing to open six underground schools, with three of them expected to be completed in the near future. This initiative aims to provide safe learning environments for children as the region continues to face security challenges.
Speaking during a national telethon, Mayor Terekhov highlighted the city's efforts to maintain educational opportunities for its youth:
"We now have the opportunity to teach more than 5,000 school-age children. We have equipped six subway stations for educational purposes. Additionally, we have built a dedicated underground school designed for nearly a thousand students in two shifts, and we are utilizing it to the fullest. Currently, we are preparing six underground schools, and we hope to complete three of them soon so that more children have the opportunity to learn."
The city has already converted subway stations into makeshift classrooms and constructed a specialized underground school to ensure that education continues despite the ongoing conflict. The underground facilities are equipped to handle thousands of students, providing a secure setting away from potential threats.
By expanding these underground educational facilities, Kharkiv is demonstrating a commitment to its students' safety and education. The initiative not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also ensures that the city's youth have access to consistent learning opportunities during these challenging times.
