Delfi reports that Latvia continues to support Ukrainians who had to leave their homeland because of the Russian full-scale military invasion. The government, therefore, plans to increase support to refugees from €21 million to €32 million. This amount is required to cover local governments' expenses in accommodation and food for Ukrainians.
The finance minister should inform the Seimas Commission on budget and finance about such a decision. The Commission may, within five days, accept or challenge changes in appropriations.
Latvia has been supporting Ukraine since the first days of the war. It is both financial and humanitarian aid for migrants and military and political aid. Another increase in budget expenditures for the solution of the Ukrainian issue testifies to the readiness to support the people affected by the invaders and recognize the danger of the Russian Federation to Ukrainian cities. It should be noted that according to the United Nations, about 8 million citizens of Ukraine asked for temporary protection due to the Russian war. Only 1.7 million people have returned to Ukraine since the beginning of 2023.
