Legal Agreement Between Ukraine and the EU on Common Air Space

Ukraine has agreed on an air space treaty with representatives of the European Union

On October 12, 2021, the Ministry of infrastructure and the European Union signed a document on the aviation area. To date, Ukraine is preparing to ratify the relevant instrument. It will deal with common air routes for Ukraine and the countries of the European Union.

At the beginning of February 2022, a step of significance for the treaty agreement on details became known. The minister of infrastructure, Kurbakov Oleksandr, and the director of the European commission’s directorate of mobility and transport, Henryk Khololei, addressed the issue. During an official interview, they agreed on a road map for the implementation of the agreement on common airspace.

"The Ministry of infrastructure forms the composition of the Ukrainian part of the common committee of the agreement for the work of the diplomats of Ukraine and the EU on the realization of the document," stated in the communication of the Ukrainian Ministry.

Now the representatives of the countries have a few more steps to take, after which the common goal will be achieved.

It is important to note that the document's main purpose is to grant equal rights to Ukrainian and European airlines. Also, a treaty between EU countries and Ukraine will help:

  • Eliminate the existing monopoly on certain routes;
  • Initiate the opening of new routes.

The destruction of the monopoly of routes is planned through bilateral agreements. The creation of new directions is planned for both sides — Ukrainian and EU. Flights should expand the lists of Ukrainian and foreign cities with common air traffic.
