Lithuania Completes Fence With Belarus

The barrier between the states began to be erected due to the artificial migration crisis created by Belarus against Lithuania and Poland in 2021

In the spring of 2021, Belarus deliberately created a migration crisis with the participation of Poland, Lithuania and refugees from Iraq and Syria, who use Belarus as a “corridor to Europe”.

According to deputy minister of the Interior of Lithuania Arnoldas Abromavicius, the fence on the border with Belarus will be completed by the end of this year. Thanks to the coordinated actions of the governments of the states, Poland and Lithuania managed to stop the flow of illegal migrants and send them back to Belarus. After that, both European states began to build a wall along the border with the collaborating country of Russia. Poland has already completed the construction, Lithuania is at the finish line.

"We, as a member state, propose to the Commission, the Council (EU) to amend the legislation, especially in relation to the Schengen Borders Code, to take into account the physical barrier as a means of ensuring border protection and to consider some special measures to prevent the instrumentalization of migrants," Abramovichius.

The foreign minister says that the situation with migrants is under control, but against the backdrop of the war against Ukraine, the situation has only worsened, since Belarus is an ally of the Kremlin.
