The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has, for the first time, issued an official permit to a private Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operator school. The Global Drone Academy in Kyiv received certification under a streamlined process, marking a significant step in expanding the nation's drone operator training capabilities.
With this certification, the academy is now authorized not only to train both military and civilian UAV operators but also to provide graduates with the appropriate military occupational specialty. This accreditation enables graduates to serve in the Ukrainian Armed Forces in specialized roles.
The certification process was part of an experimental project approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine two weeks prior. The initiative aims to increase the number of trained specialists within the country and to enhance the quality of education provided by private schools. Certified institutions must meet stringent criteria to ensure high standards of training.
Founded in 2022, the Global Drone Academy has already trained over 3,700 UAV operators. Among its alumni are personnel from elite units such as the Special Operations Forces (SSO), the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR), the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), and the Armed Forces of Ukraine (ZSU).
This development reflects Ukraine's commitment to advancing its drone capabilities by leveraging private sector expertise to supplement military training programs. The move is expected to bolster the country's defense readiness and technological proficiency in unmanned systems.
