Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Joins NATO Project on Microgrid Resilience

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense is joining a NATO initiative to develop technologies that ensure reliable operation of small electrical grids using renewable energy sources

This was announced by Deputy Minister of Defense, Brigadier General of Justice Serhiy Melnyk.

About the Initiative

The research falls under the MILGRID (Military Initiative for Microgrid Resilience) project, part of NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) program. One of the Ministry’s higher military educational institutions will participate in the project.

“Using renewable energy sources in small electrical grids will enhance stable power supply for essential equipment, including under combat conditions,” Melnyk noted.
“Ukraine, together with NATO, will engage in developing these technologies and testing them. Should the research prove successful, the solutions will be integrated into the Defense Forces’ current systems.”

Role of the Defense Ministry

  • The Ministry will help define the requirements for microgrids, coordinate their deployment, and test scenarios.
  • The results will be shared with the project participants for further development.

“Work in this area will strengthen cooperation between NATO and Ukraine in defense research and development,” Melnyk emphasized.
“Additionally, the universal nature of this research could be applied to mitigating natural disasters, withstanding attacks on civilian infrastructure, or other emergencies where backup power is critical.”

Project Details

  • The Science for Peace and Security (SPS) program unites scientists from Ukraine and from NATO/EU member states to address security issues through joint scientific cooperation.
  • Funding for the initiative will be provided by a NATO grant.
