As of January 2023, 36.892 entrepreneurs are registered in Ukraine, of which 18.776 are women. This trend started in 2017. Already by 2020–21, 51% of Ukrainian physical enterprises were opened by women, and the situation changed with the onset of a full-scale Russian war in February 2022. That year, despite the war, more than new 93.000 enterprises were registered, most of which were retail trade, then tailoring clothing and textiles, education and human resources (75%), social and humanitarian assistance (74%) and healthcare (72%).
In 2023, more than 35% of women entrepreneurs continue to be retailers, almost double the number of men in this business category. The second most popular among women is the IT sector: here in 2023, 10.658 women started their own businesses, which in percentage terms represents 34% of the total number of registered entrepreneurs.
Among other things, in 2023 more women began to occupy leadership positions in companies. Although in percentage terms, men still prevail in top positions: 20.962 (66.3%) men against 10.658 (33.7%) women.
