NATO to Process Ukraine’s Application

Stoltenberg received an official application from Ukraine to join NATO

On September 30, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, signed an official statement on the accelerated entry into the North Atlantic Alliance. On the evening of October 4, it was reported that NATO commander Jens Stoltenberg had received the document. Once registered, the application will be forwarded to all organisation members for consideration. This step will be taken in Brussels in the presence of 30 ambassadors of all countries. The secretary-general of NATO recalls that all 30 member countries, without exception, must agree to join.

For 5 days, the Ukrainian initiative has been supported by 10 countries. However, the North Atlantic Council has yet to consider and discuss the application. In addition, we should not expect that even after voting, Ukraine will be able to join NATO immediately. The country will have to go through almost every step because expedited accession procedures mean only that one step is unnecessary. With the accelerated admission of the country to the Alliance, the candidates do not require creating a membership action plan. However, the process has started, and Ukraine has already proved its readiness to be in the Alliance

One of the first discussions of Ukraine's application to join the Alliance may take place at the ambassadorial level during Ukraine's Defense contact group meeting on October 12-13.
