“Netflix’s” Purchase of the Ukrainian Film Rights

The streaming service bought the Ukrainian crime drama by Oleh Sentsov "Rhinoceros" for display in spring 2022

Rhinoceros is the second feature-length film by Ukrainian stage director Sentsov. The plot of the film carries viewers in the 1990s. The protagonist, nicknamed Rhino, enters the criminal world and begins his bloody journey, which will lead him far from where he expected.

The movie was conceived in 2012. It was realized between 2019 and 2021. The film premiered on September 9, 2021. Rhinoceros was the best movie at the Stockholm Film Festival, and the main character was named the best actor of the year. The film has already been bought for display in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and other countries. Now Netflix, the world’s most popular streaming service, has acquired the rights to the show.

The project received partial government funding of $892.875. This contribution covered 50% of the filming costs. Rhino also won the Polish Institute competition and received financial support from a firm foundation from Poland and Germany.

The online premiere at Netflix will take place in April or May 2022. It is also reported that pre-conference screenings will take place in Ukraine from 10 to February 17.
