According to the procedure for the regulatory rotation of EU ambassadors, every 4 years in September, states receive a new diplomatic representative. It is planned to replace Matti Maasikas on his recommendation with Katarina Mathernova, who is dealing with the issue of expanding the European Commission and is already in close cooperation with Ukraine. Among other things, Ms Mathernova is the former head of the Support Group for Ukraine. This explains why Matti Maasikas chose Katarina.
"The move, according to EU officials, is yet another signal of support for Ukraine's efforts to join the bloc while fighting Russia's war of aggression against the country," Euractiv.
Provided that Ukraine has effectively fulfilled all 7 conditions for joining the European Union, integration negotiations can begin this year.
"Mathernova's appointment could be a key to push European interests in Ukraine while at the same time offering all the technical support and expertise Kyiv needs to make progress on accession," Euractiv citing European diplomats.
We remind you that the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine (February 2022), the return of the EU embassy to Kyiv (April 2022) and the receipt of the completed application form for Ukraine to join the European Union fell on the term of Matti Maasikas.
