Norway to Provide Six Aircraft to Ukraine in the Near Future: Umyerov’s Negotiations

During a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov held bilateral talks with his Norwegian counterpart, Bjorn Arild Gram, leading to concrete agreements on enhancing Ukraine’s air defense

Umyerov confirmed that Norway will soon provide six F-16 aircraft to Ukraine.

"A key focus was on the aviation component, specifically strengthening our capabilities with F-16 fighters. Norway will continue to support Ukraine and deliver six aircraft in the near future," Umyerov announced on Telegram.

In addition to the aviation support, both ministers discussed the development of Ukraine's defense industry, with Norway considering joining the "Danish model" of direct financing for Ukrainian defense enterprises. This model allows foreign countries to finance Ukraine’s defense production, bolstering local manufacturing capabilities.

The Norwegian Ministry of Defense has yet to release an official statement on the results of this meeting.

Background on Norway's Support:

  • July 2023: Norway announced the decision to transfer six F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, with the transfer expected to begin by the end of the year.
  • February 2023: Norway's parliament approved a multi-year support program for Ukraine, allocating NOK 75 billion (around $7.3 billion), to be distributed annually at NOK 15 billion.
  • September 2024: Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Haar Støre confirmed that the aid package would be extended until 2030, with the total support amounting to NOK 135 billion.

This enhanced cooperation between Norway and Ukraine further solidifies international efforts to bolster Ukraine’s defense against ongoing aggression and strengthen its military capabilities for the future.
