More than 60 types of Ukrainian ammunition approved for operation in 2025
-
Largest group of new ammunition developed for unmanned systems
-
Includes artillery, mortar, engineering, and small arms ammunition
-
First domestically produced practical 40mm grenade launcher rounds
-
Supports both Soviet and NATO-caliber weaponry
🛠 Ammunition for Unmanned and Conventional Systems
According to the Main Directorate for Ensuring the Life Cycle of Armaments and Military Equipment, the largest category of newly introduced ammunition supports unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) — a strategic focus of Ukraine’s defense strategy. These developments align with Ukraine’s broader effort to standardize technical requirements for UAVs and boost drone warfare capabilities.
Additionally, newly codified munitions cover:
-
Artillery and mortar shells
-
Engineering and demolition explosives
-
Small arms ammunition in both NATO and Soviet calibers
💣 New Practical Grenade Launcher Rounds
Ukrainian arms manufacturers have also developed 40mm practical grenade rounds for under-barrel and automatic grenade launchers:
-
Inert grenades: No explosive charge, for safe training
-
Marker grenades: Contain colored dye for hit identification
These types are crucial for military training and calibration of weapons, allowing troops to practice safely and effectively.
🧩 Strategic Goal: Full Self-Sufficiency in Ammunition Production
“It is important that domestic gunsmiths manage to master the production of new types of ammunition for various purposes,” said Valery Churkin, Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine. “Our task is to master the production of a wide range of weapons and equipment as soon as possible.”
This push for ammunition self-sufficiency is a direct response to the challenges of wartime logistics and foreign dependence. In 2025, a third of Ukraine’s defense budget was allocated specifically to technological weapons development.
🚀 Recent Supportive Reforms
To complement domestic production, the Ukrainian government has also:
-
Simplified the import of explosives and components
-
Encouraged private sector participation in arms development
-
Accelerated codification and certification processes for defense products
📈 Outlook
As Ukraine increases its ammunition production capabilities, it is setting the stage for long-term resilience, autonomy, and combat readiness. The 60+ new ammunition types symbolize not just innovation, but strategic independence at a time of critical need.
