Overall, production is up 35% from 2019, the highest since 2015. The growth took place in all three main types of products, in particular:
- Urea — by 47%;
- Ammonium nitrate — by 8%;
- Urea-ammonia mixture — by 29%.
There are 5 large plants for the production of nitrogen fertilizers in Ukraine: three plants of the Ostchem group (Cherkasy, Rivne, Severodonetsk), which in 2020 produced 2/3 of all nitrogen fertilizers in Ukraine. And also the Odesa Port Plant.
The Dnipro region in this list is represented by JSC Dneprazot, one of the largest chemical industry enterprises in Ukraine. It is the only enterprise in the country to produce liquid chlorine used for the sterilization of drinking water and wastewater treatment. The company is a leading supplier of mineral fertilizers (ammonia, urea, and ammonia water), essential chemistry products (caustic soda and synthetic hydrochloric acid) sodium hypochlorite consumer goods. The products produced here are in constant demand in agriculture, chemical, energy, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, mechanical engineering, water treatment, and many other sectors of the national economy.
The growth of domestic production has significantly reduced imports of fertilizers in Ukraine. So, in 2020, the volume of imports of nitrogen fertilizers more than halved and amounted to $152 million against $365 million in 2019. In terms of physical weight, imports in 2020 amounted to 816 thousand tons. The largest share of imports — 46.7%, was occupied by ammonium nitrate, which is the most monopolized in Ukraine.
In 2019, the geography of the countries supplying nitrogen fertilizers in Ukraine had also radically changed. In 2020, Ukraine imported nitrogen fertilizers from 32 countries. The largest suppliers were:
- Belarus, with a share of 29%;
- Poland — 23%;
- Georgia — 13%;
- Lithuania — 10%;
- Bulgaria — 10%;
- Kazakhstan — 6%.
