Results of the Visit of the PM of Ukraine to Canada

Free trade agreement update, military assistance package, sanctions against 48 Russians

On the morning of April 11, Denys Shmuhal arrived in Canada for talks with Justin Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland. As a result of the negotiations, agreements were updated and concluded in 3 areas.

The parties updated the free trade agreement between Ukraine and Canada from 2017. The most important addition to the current agreement was the agreement on digital trade. Earlier, Ukraine signed a similar agreement with the UK. The treaty eliminates tariffs on several goods shared with Israeli, EU and British and European Free Trade Association components. The agreement provides guarantees for investors and their ventures.

Canadian defence minister Anita Anand said that Canada had prepared a gratuitous military aid package for Ukraine: 21.000 assault rifles, 38 machine guns and more than 2.4 million rounds of ammunition.

"These weapons will support Ukraine's fight for self-defence and the defence of our common values," Anita Anand.

Among other things, Canada has imposed sanctions against another 48 Russian persons: 14 individuals and 34 legal entities.
