Every month, the headship of the UN passes from one permanent representative to another. For example, the previous heads of the UN from January were Japan, Malta, Mozambique. On April 1, Russia assumed the chairmanship of the UN.
The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, reacted to this absurd fact.
"Russia taking over today UN Security Council presidency is fitting for April fools' day. Despite being a permanent member of the Security Council, Russia continuously violates the very essence of the UN legal framework. The EU will stand against any abuse by the Russian presidency," Josep Borrell.
"Russia assuming the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council is both immoral and deplorable but this won't stop us from working to hold war criminals in Moscow accountable and continue rallying support for Ukraine," Edgars Rinkevics.
In turn, the minister of foreign affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, called on the members of the UN Security Council not to let Russia, which illegally sits on the council, not to use its position during this month. In May, Switzerland will take over the reins of the UN.
