On June 6, Russian troops blew up the Kakhovska hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region. This is a disaster on a massive scale. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called an urgent meeting of the Security Council and defence forces of Ukraine. Water from the Dnipro river rushed to nearby settlements. An urgent evacuation of people from populated areas from the right bank of the Dnipro was announced, which in 5 hours will completely or partially go under water: the villages of Mykolaevka, Olgovka, Levo, Tyaginka, Ponyatovka, Ivanovka, Tokarevka, Ponyatovka, Pridneprov and partly Kherson — Korabel island.
"Kakhovska HPP. Another war crime of Russian terrorists. The president is gathering the National Security and Defense Council. This is an ecocide. The Russians will be responsible for the possible deprivation of drinking water of people in the south of Kherson and Crimea, the destruction of part of the settlements and the biosphere is possible," head of the office of the president of Ukraine Andriy Yermak.
There is a high probability of an accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant: water from the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station cooled the plant's reactors. Without cooling the reactors, an explosion of a nuclear power plant is possible. Probably, it will happen in 5 hours.
Possible flooding of the Kinburn spit. This will lead to the death of animals and the destruction of the entire ecosphere.
A number of cities are completely de-energized and disconnected from gas supply. The threat of being left without water and electricity is moving to Crimea.
According to the country's government, with this inadequate action, the Russian army tried to disrupt the counteroffensive of Ukraine.
"Russian terrorists. The destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam only confirms for the whole world that they must be expelled from every corner of Ukrainian land. Not a single meter should be left to them, because they use every meter for terror. It’s only Ukraine's victory that will return security. And this victory will come. The terrorists will not be able to stop Ukraine with water, missiles or anything else," Volodymyr Zelensky.
