Russians in Latvia Obliged to Take a Language Test

Latvia obliged Russian residents on its territory to pass a test on knowledge of the Latvian language

Do you remember one of the reasons why Moscow started a war against Ukraine? The Kremlin decided to "protect the Russian-speaking population on the territory of Ukraine." As of January 1, 2022, in Latvia were 49.441 Russians who still have a Russian passport. These people have lived in Latvia for decades but do not have citizenship of their own accord. This situation instils fear in ethnic Latvians and makes them feel in danger on the territory of their own state.

And to protect its own population, on May 9, the Latvian government voted to pass a mandatory test on knowledge of the state language for Russian citizens living in Latvia. According to Reuters, about 20.000 Russians will take the test. Its results will reflect the basic knowledge of the Latvian language and the loyalty of Russians who simultaneously use European living conditions and a Russian passport.

We remind you that on April 21, the Kremlin propagandist Solovyov stated that Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, like Ukraine, should be "denazified": "This is what I am absolutely convinced of, that when we finish the "denazification" of Ukraine, we need to deal with the Baltia (Baltic countries — ed.). Perhaps it is unnecessary to wait for the end of the denazification of Ukraine because of what these nazis allowed themselves when they forbid the celebration of May 9..."
