Sweden Allocates $443 Million Military Aid Package to Ukraine

Sweden has announced a new military aid package to Ukraine valued at $443 million, marking the 17th aid installment from the country

This was confirmed by Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson, Reuters reports. The package includes ammunition and equipment for infantry fighting vehicles previously provided to Ukraine and aims to lay the groundwork for future potential transfers of Swedish Gripen fighter jets.

Sweden's Ministry of Defense outlined the comprehensive list of assistance, which includes:

  • 40 mm ammunition for combat vehicles,
  • Material support for JAS 39 Gripen fighters,
  • Grenade launchers and recoilless rifles with ammunition,
  • Six 1990s-era combat boats,
  • Two launch trailers compatible with various boat types, including the Combat Boat 90,
  • Robot System 70 anti-aircraft missile systems,
  • Training equipment for Ukrainian military personnel,
  • Helmets, winter gear, and protective face masks,
  • Camouflage equipment for armored vehicles.

The package also allocates approximately $67 million to multilateral funds supporting Ukraine in 2024, with plans to invest further in the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s aerial drone capabilities.

Gripen Fighter Transfer to Ukraine

Ukraine has begun familiarization training for Swedish Gripen fighters. Discussions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Swedish officials indicate ongoing negotiations for the eventual transfer of these aircraft. While Ukrainian pilots and ground crews have completed basic training for the JAS 39 Gripen, the focus remains on integrating F-16 fighters into Ukraine’s air force. Sweden had previously paused the Gripen transfer in May 2024 at the request of its allies but remains engaged in discussions regarding future deliveries. The security agreement signed between Ukraine and Sweden in May 2024 lays out the possibility of Gripen transfers, including associated training programs.
