In an interview with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, Swedish Defense Minister Poul Jonsson confirmed that part of Sweden’s latest aid package to Ukraine—valued at $1.59 billion, the largest the country has ever provided—will be earmarked specifically for purchases from the Polish defense industry.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
"I visited the WB Group, and I must say you have truly impressive capabilities and are very innovative in the field of drones. However, we need a more balanced relationship regarding arms procurement between Poland and Sweden," Jonsson stated. "That’s why in our latest aid package to Ukraine we have allocated funds exclusively for acquiring systems from the Polish defense industry, as your proximity to the front line gives you unique insights," he added. Although Minister Jonsson did not specify which types of drones will be ordered from WB Electronics, the move underscores a growing strategic partnership between Sweden and Poland in defense procurement.
Proven Performance on the Front Lines
Ukrainian forces are already benefiting from Polish-made technology, employing WB Electronics’ Warmate attack drones and FlyEye reconnaissance drones. The FlyEye drones, in particular, have been widely used by Ukrainian defenders both domestically and in operations within the Kursk and Belgorod regions. These systems have demonstrated significant utility by directing fire from HIMARS systems against command posts, enemy troop concentrations, and targets related to anti-aircraft and electronic warfare.
A Dynamic Future for Defense Collaboration
The decision to purchase Polish drones reflects a broader trend of increased defense cooperation between Sweden and Poland. As both countries continue to navigate the evolving security environment in Europe, further collaboration in technology and arms procurement is expected to grow. For now, details regarding the volume and cost of the order remain undisclosed, but the strategic intent is clear.
Sweden’s investment in Polish drone technology is set to reinforce Ukraine’s defense capabilities while also deepening bilateral ties between European allies committed to security in the region. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing collaboration and additional support measures for Ukraine.
