The Historical Center of Odesa Recognized as a UNESCO Monument

On January 25, the location was added to the World Heritage List

Just a few km from military operations, one of the pearls of Ukraine is the city of Odesa and its authentic centre. This is a historical value for Ukraine, which urgently needed to be protected from Russian aggression. On July 24, 2022, Russian artillery destroyed the unique glass roof of the Odessa museum of fine arts from 1899.

The minister of culture of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko initiated the inclusion of the centre of Odesa in the World Heritage List. On January 25, UNESCO recognized this complex of objects as a UNESCO cultural heritage and will be protected accordingly.

"At the request of Ukraine, UNESCO has already mobilized international experts to provide technical support to the country so that this nomination can be urgently considered by the member states sitting in the World Heritage Committee, with the aim of including it in the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger," UNESCO.

In addition, UNESCO plans to add Kyiv and Lviv to the World Heritage List.
