The NY Metropolitan Opera Will Present an Opera by a Ukrainian Composer

American MO will order the writing of an opera to a Ukrainian composer and provide him with a librettist

Soon within the walls of the Metropolitan Opera, it will be possible to enjoy a work of Ukrainian authorship: the organization has begun selection from among Ukrainian composers. The winning composer will be provided with a librettist, accommodation in New York and a two-week workshop at the Metropolitan Opera or Lincoln Center rehearsal room. The composer will receive about 2 years to write the work, during which he is guaranteed financial and creative support from the Metropolitan Opera. After writing the score in the opera, rehearsals will be held with the singers. If the work passes the criticism stage of the Metropolitan Opera, a contract will be signed, and the composer will continue to work.

"We are happy to help draw attention to the vibrant cultural creativity of the Ukrainian composer community, especially now that Ukraine is heroically defending its cultural heritage," Metropolitan Opera general manager Peter Gelb.

This work has every chance to take its place in history as the world-famous Christmas Shchedryk (Carol of the bells) by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovich.
