A drone built for radio reconnaissance
Ukrainian developers have presented TRACER, an aerial radio reconnaissance complex designed to search for ground sources of radio emissions. The system targets the signals behind modern battlefield activity: UAV control stations, electronic warfare equipment, radars and Wi-Fi bridges. According to the available description, the path from concept to finished product took about six months, and several Ukrainian Defense Forces units are already using the system.
The core idea is to move radio reconnaissance into the air while keeping the crew at a safer distance. Operators can work roughly ten kilometers from the combat line, while the airborne platform listens passively and does not reveal itself by emitting a signal. This is especially important in an environment where both sides hunt for antennas, operators and command posts.
Range and battlefield logic
The declared detection ranges show why such systems matter. TRACER can detect an FPV control station at up to fifteen kilometers, Mavic-type control signals at up to ten kilometers and radar sources at up to thirty kilometers. The system’s direction-finding cycle takes about forty to fifty minutes, and the reported bearing accuracy is around three degrees. At a distance of ten kilometers this may still leave a search area of several hundred meters, so the result usually needs additional reconnaissance before a strike decision.
TRACER is also designed for electronic warfare conditions. It can switch frequencies in flight to counter threats and interference, while optical navigation helps it operate when satellite navigation is suppressed. In one described route of eight kilometers out and back, the navigation error was about four hundred meters, which is a practical result for an EW-heavy zone.
Why investors and partners should watch it
The complex is undergoing codification at Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense. If successful, TRACER will join a growing class of Ukrainian systems that combine unmanned platforms, passive sensors and fast field iteration. For partners, this is not only about one drone. It is about Ukraine’s ability to turn frontline needs into specialized reconnaissance products, test them quickly and build export-ready defense technology around real combat experience.
