Determined to End the War
U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed strong optimism about achieving a breakthrough in efforts to end the war in Ukraine. According to senior White House officials, Trump’s confidence grew following his recent success in facilitating a complex hostage exchange in the Middle East, which he views as proof that diplomatic persistence can deliver tangible results.
The administration noted that Trump has consistently emphasized the need to bring the war between Russia and Ukraine to an end, positioning peace in Eastern Europe as one of the defining goals of his foreign policy. Recent developments have reportedly “strengthened his determination” to pursue an active mediation role.
What Will Be Discussed at the Meeting
The highly anticipated meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Donald Trump is scheduled for October 17 in Washington.
According to Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States Olha Stefanishyna, the agenda will include several critical items:
-
Request for long-range Tomahawk missiles and other strategic weapons systems;
-
Strengthening Ukraine’s air defense ahead of the winter season;
-
Energy resilience amid ongoing Russian strikes on critical infrastructure;
-
Expansion of cooperation in drone production and defense technology.
Officials in Kyiv emphasize that the meeting will not only focus on immediate battlefield needs but also on developing a new strategic framework for U.S.–Ukrainian cooperation in defense, energy, and technology.
Teams Preparing for a Breakthrough
Stefanishyna revealed that multiple Ukrainian delegations have been working in Washington for the past two weeks to prepare the ground for the presidential summit.
“We have several Ukrainian teams working to maximize the impact of the leaders’ meeting. Military groups have been coordinating with the Pentagon, the Prime Minister is holding consultations with financial partners, and energy experts are working to strengthen cooperation on gas purchases and infrastructure protection,”
— said the ambassador.
She added that the current round of talks represents a new format of engagement between Kyiv and Washington — one where multiple sectors operate in parallel to ensure fast implementation of post-summit agreements.
White House Expectations
Sources cited by Axios confirm that the White House expects “a substantial breakthrough” from the upcoming meeting. Discussions will reportedly include specific packages of military aid, with special attention to the potential delivery of Tomahawk cruise missiles, a long-standing request from Kyiv.
While Moscow has reacted sharply to reports of possible new weapons transfers, Russian officials have stated that they will “wait for the results” of the Trump–Zelensky summit before issuing a formal response.
Outlook
For both leaders, the October 17 meeting represents an opportunity to reset the trajectory of the war and redefine the broader U.S.–Ukrainian partnership.
If successful, it could pave the way for a new phase of strategic cooperation — combining military support with economic recovery and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
The world will be watching closely as Washington and Kyiv prepare for what could become one of the most consequential meetings of the year.
