U.S. Acquires Over 80 Soviet-Era Aircraft from Kazakhstan, Likely Destined for Ukraine

The United States has reportedly purchased more than 80 Soviet-era aircraft from Kazakhstan, with indications that these might be transferred to Ukraine

The aircraft involved in this deal include MiG-27, MiG-29, and Su-24 models, which were declared unserviceable.

This move is part of Kazakhstan’s broader strategy to modernize its air force, gradually phasing out older Soviet aircraft for newer models like the Russian Su-30SM and exploring options with Western manufacturers. In October of the previous year, Kazakhstan announced an auction for 117 Soviet-era fighters and bombers, including MiG-31 interceptors and MiG-27 and Su-24 bombers, with a total starting bid of one billion tenge ($1.5 million).

The sale noted that these aircraft were not economically viable for modernization and had limited utility even as sources of spare parts. Despite their reported unserviceable status, credible sources such as Reporter.RU and the Ukrainian Telegram channel Insider UA have confirmed the U.S. acquisition of 81 of these aircraft via offshore transactions.

Although the official reason for the purchase was not disclosed, it is speculated that these aircraft will eventually make their way to Ukraine, where they could be used for spare parts or potentially as decoys against Russian aerial operations. This acquisition aligns with ongoing international support for Ukraine amidst its conflict with Russia, highlighting the strategic repurposing of older military assets to bolster Ukraine's defenses.
